The chain of title
Option or assignment on the underlying work, authors' contracts, directing agreement, clearances from people filmed, music rights and archive rights: every link must be documented.
An incomplete chain blocks payments, insurance and sales.
Intellectual property and co-production
In co-production, ownership of the elements, handling of remakes and sequels, and revenue sharing must be written into the initial agreement.
Practices vary by country: it is preferable to rely on specialised legal counsel in each territory involved.
